Understanding our Shipping Costs:
Many factors play into the cost of shipping. At Minnesota Metal Designs, our products are heavy – as they are made out of metal. Almost all of our products are large in size and some weigh up to 70 pounds.
We realize that our shipping prices may be considered high. Our products are made from heavier gauge steel than many of the same style items you may find at a “big box” store. We also put a lot of thought into the design of our products, as they are very practical and user friendly. We excel at manufacturing quality products that should bring you many years of service and enjoyment.
For years, small package carriers shipped packages only according to weight, which meant that packages, regardless of size, were only billed based on the actual weight.
Several years ago small package carriers started to charge by dimensional weight. Dimensional weight reflects package density, which is the amount of the space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. An example would be a pillow, which may not weigh much in terms of pounds, but will be shipped in a box that takes up a lot of room on a truck.
By using dimensional weight, shipping carriers helped to ensure that the costs they incur to deliver a package more closely aligned with the fees they charged. Basically, they wanted to be paid for the space that was occupied on their trucks for big, lightweight packages.
At first, the dimensional rate rules only applied to larger packages, which meant that it did not apply for the majority of parcels. That has since changed, and their new rule is that dimensional weight will be calculated with packages as small as a shoe box. Carriers also have an additional charge if the package is excessively long. This rule applies to many items we ship at Minnesota Metal Designs.
Due to the fact that our products are large and heavy, we only quote ground shipping prices on our website. If you want an order to be shipped by air, please call your order in and we will quote you some shipping price options.
Shipping prices listed on our website are for the 48 contiguous United States only. See below for information on shipping to other locations.
